It should move freely if you press the little nickel-plated tab on the top right side of the carriage. Pressing it down should allow you to slide the entire carriage left and right. If not, it may need lubricating or it may be seized with age, which may require disassembly to clean it up. Also the small spring loaded strap may be broken, but I don't think that should affect your ability to move the carriage by hand.

There's a Yahoo group for typewriters, and they can give you a lot more information on the exact disassembly process, and probably even some parts sources.

Re: The Underwood #6 Typewriter

CAN YOU TELL ME HOW TO UNLOCK THE CARRIAGE ON THIS MODEL? CHRISONLINE209@YAHOO.COM

Re: Coming Clean…

Well, it's a far cry from "World Without Gravity", but I knew you had it in you!
I really enjoyed the Nelson Eddy recording. : ) I had never heard any of his Christmas music, so that was a treat.
I really enjoyed the recording of Nelson Eddy's "Smilin' Through", it was lovely! And your phonograph sounds great, that is so neat that you can play Edison records too.

I really get a kick out of sharing this music - I'm glad you enjoy it. I had to give a little history on this one, because of my combined interest in organs, so I knew a little about Aeolian who sponsored this record label, it's an interesting twist.

Re: Mama Goes Where Papa Goes…

Cute song! I am enjoying your recordings of your records, thank you for sharing them. : ) I also liked how you gave some history of the record company, that was very interesting.
We watched that movie a while back, and it is a good one. I really liked the beginning scenes at the train station. Quite the unusual ending.
